Join ARC LAB
To join the lab, applicants are required to review researcher responsibilities and undergo a multistage independent problem set. The total process is composed of 5 stages:
5 Step Application and Onboarding
Step 1:
The Research Assistantship Application
Currently: This portion of the process can be accessed by way of Sep or another Research Lead within the lab. The first portion of the onboarding process for the ARC Lab. This google sheet clearly outlines the expectations for all researchers in the ARC lab. Upon confirmation of their eligibility through agreeing to these terms, applicants receive the instructions for Step 2: The Launch Pad.
Step 2:
The Launch Pad
The Launch Pad is the "test" for joining the lab that contains varied problem sets to test applicant's resilience and problem solving capabilities. The Launch Pad has options for synchronous and asynchronous routes, for candidates the goals of both routes are the same: to gain access to the ARC Lab slack channel. These challenges have been designed to push applicants to take long hours or even days to complete in full. This challenge is meant to be self-paced. * For applicants looking to join the lab in a non-technical position, please reach out to Sep or the team lead directly.
Step 3:
Lab Safety Training
As a member of the ARC Lab, researchers often tackle hands-on challenges within the ARC Lab space. Within this space there is a mix of delicate hardware and dangerous electrical/mechanical equipment, thus any researcher who wishes to make use of the lab must be aware of safe conduct within the lab. Upon successfully passing the Lab Safety Training quiz, researchers receive the instructions for gaining key card access to the laboratory.
Step 4:
Finding a Project
Researchers who join the lab without a specific project in mind can make use of a detailed guide to narrow down which projects within the lab may suit their skills and interests. This additionally outlines the process for reaching out to leads and joining their project(s).
Step 5:
Acquiring Research Credit
UW student researchers are able to earn credit for the work that they participate in. For many students in the lab, this means applying for research credit each quarter, and is generally the final step of the formal onboarding process for new researchers.
